Matthew Mills has spent three decades building a practice that refuses to be neatly filed. He performs across the UK as a recitalist and chamber musician, accompanies for the Royal Academy of Dance, writes about music with the rigour of a scholar and the directness of a polemicist, and teaches students who have gone on to leading universities and conservatoires.
He studied at the Universities of Oxford and London and at Trinity College of Music, where his teachers included Christopher Elton in piano and Simon Holt in composition. An Oxford award funded specialist study of contemporary repertoire with Rolf Hind; he has appeared in masterclasses with John Lill, Rosalyn Tureck, George Benjamin, and Michael Finnissy.
His recording of Bernard Hughes's solo piano music — Bagatelles — was released on Divine Art Records in 2023 to widespread critical acclaim. He is a regular contributor to Pianist magazine and writes on music for the general intellectual press. His editorial imprint, Black Swan Press, publishes critical editions of rare keyboard repertoire from the seventeenth, eighteenth, and nineteenth centuries.
