Vogel: 100 Eight-Bar Studies, op. 33

After studying at the Conservatory in Leipzig, composer, organist, and teacher Moritz Wilhelm Vogel remained in the city until his death. As founding director of the choir at St. Peter’s Church, then choral director at the Matthäikirche, with the Ossian Society for Sacred Music, and as music teacher at the Municipal College for Girls and the municipal high school for girls, where he was eventually appointed professor, he made an indelible impact on musical life in the city. His work as a teacher can be felt in his piano music, which is attractive and accessible without sacrificing either integrity or imagination.

Vogel’s op. 33 is an appealing collection of short studies, suitable for beginner to intermediate pianists, which between them cover a wide range of the styles, techniques, and textures often encountered in the Classical and Romantic repertoire. The work is presented here for the first time since its initial publication, in a new Critical Urtext edition.

Der Komponist, Organist und Pädagoge Moritz Wilhelm Vogel blieb nach seiner Ausbildung am Konservatorium in Leipzig bis zu seinem Tod in der Stadt. Als Gründungschorleiter der Peterskirche, dann Chorleiter an der Matthäikirche, bei der Chorgesangverein Ossian zur Pflege geistlicher Musik, und als Musiklehrer an die Städtische Fortbildungsschule für Mädchen und als Fachlehrer für Musik an der Höheren Schule für Mädchen, wo er schließlich berufen wurde als Professor prägte er das Musikleben der Stadt nachhaltig. Der Einfluss seiner Lehrtätigkeit ist in seiner Klaviermusik spürbar, die angenehm und zugänglich ist ohne Integrität oder Vorstellungskraft zu opfern.

Vogels op. 33 ist eine ansprechende Sammlung kurzer Etüden, geeignet für Pianisten auf Anfänger- und Mittelstufe, die eine breite Palette von Stilen, Techniken und Texturen behandeln, die oft im klassischen und romantischen Repertoire anzutreffen sind. Das Werk erscheint hier erstmals seit seiner Erstveröffentlichung in einer neuen kritischen Urtextausgabe.
